How LiveRamp Computes Estimated Overlap Percentages

As part of the process to enable a segment for Customer Profiles, we match the records in the segment to all maintained RampIDs in advance. When the overlap is performed, we sample the maintained RampIDs in the segments to compute the estimated percentage.

Situations Where an Overlap Cannot be Calculated

The process that computes real-time percentages cannot provide meaningful estimates in the very rare scenario where the number of maintained RampIDs that are present in the overlap of all segments is less than 0.05% of the total number of maintained RampIDs in the base segment.

This is usually due to one of the following reasons:

  • Including too many niche or specific segments, which results in a very small overlap.

  • Overlapping a base segment that is significantly smaller than the comparison segments.

If adjusting your segment combination is not possible, contact your LiveRamp representative for more information.

Situations Where the Overlap Percentage Doesn't Make Sense

In some situations, the overlap percentage might not make sense due to some records being included in a segment that they don't actually belong in.

For example, let's say you perform an overlap on a segment meant to contain people aged 20-29 with a segment meant to contain people aged 30-39, but a number of people aged 30-39 are also included in the age 20-29 segment. The overlap percentage should be 0% but because of the incorrect inclusion of those records, the overlap percentage shown might be 5%.
