Segment Data

Segment data are data in your files that LiveRamp uses to group your records into segments based on certain attributes (such as “Gender=Female” or “Income=25,000-49,999”) so you can distribute those segments to one of LiveRamp’s partners, typically for targeting, measurement, or personalization. For example, you can send a CRM data file (that includes a number of segment data columns, in addition to the columns of identifiers) to LiveRamp and we'll create fields and segments from those additional columns that you can manage and distribute in Connect.

Note

If you’ve already created a file containing only one segment of consumers, then one option is to send that file with only identifier columns (and with no segment data columns). Name the file with the name you want to use for the segment we'll create for you in Connect.

Note

Make sure to format all files correctly before uploading. See "Formatting File Data" for more information.

Guidelines for Including Segment Data in Files

If you're sending multiple segments in a column-based file, include a segment data column for each segment you want LiveRamp to create in Connect. Use a header label for the column that reflects the name of the field for that segment. Use the values in that column to indicate the segment each particular consumer should be put in.

Note

The same principle applies if you're sending a key-value file. Use the keys to reflect the name of the field and use the corresponding values to indicate which segment each particular consumer should be put in.

For example, say you wanted to create segments of consumers based on their favorite color. You might use a header label of "FAVORITECOLOR" for the segment data column, and then use values such as "red", "green", and "blue" (or no value, if you didn't have that information for a particular consumer) to indicate the segments you want LiveRamp to create and which consumers LiveRamp should put in which segments. LiveRamp will then create a field called "FAVORITECOLOR" with segment values for each distinct value you used in that column (such as "FAVORITECOLOR=green").

To take a different example, say you wanted to create a segment of consumers who are members of your rewards program. You might use a header label of "REWARDSPROGRAM" for the segment data column, and then use a value of "1" (or "true") in that column for each consumer who is a rewards program member.

After LiveRamp ingests your file, sets of distinct field/value pairings become segments that you can manage and distribute in Connect. See "How Records are Assigned to Segments" for more information.

Restrictions: See "LiveRamp Data Restrictions" for more information on what types of data cannot be included in files (such as a consumer's full date of birth or bank account numbers), and what types of data LiveRamp cannot distribute.

Field Types: See "Types of Segment Data Fields" for more information on the types of fields that can be created from segment data, as well as how LiveRamp determines whether a field's values can be enumerated in Connect.
